Using external word processor for writing assignments

Consider using an external word processing tool such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs when students are completing assignments with longer writing tasks. This will give your student experience with these tools. These tools also offer additional formatting options as well as feedback tools. Using editing tools like Track Changes in Microsoft Word allows parents to make comments and corrections that are easily visible to the student.

There are a number of ways that you can set this up, below is one suggested example.

Using external files

  1. Create a folder for your student to save documents in. Provide the name of the folder to your student.
  2. Your student can use a document creation tool such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs to craft their assignment response.
  3. Have your student save files for grading in the folder using the name of the course and assignment, ensuring it is easy for you to find and grade.
  4. When answering the writing questions in their assignments, have your students paste hyperlinks to Google Docs or type the file name for your reference.
  5. When grading the assignment, you will see the link or file name.
